I get knocked down...

Posted by Christoph

Christoph

----------------------------------------------

This Blog post comes in 2 weeks late - might still be fun though, we'll see!

... but I get up again :)
after a song that I guess everybody knows, but nobody knows who sang it.

Things got busy here, since my last blog post. Time flies and sometimes I find myself wishing for a break.
One reason why time is going so fast is because I get to meet new people almost everyday. With the French course going for 2 weeks now, some new friendships seem to develop and there are still a lot of people you didn't really talk to yet.
As an Erasmus everyone is kind of in the same situation: Away from friends and family it's time to make some new friends :)
Another reason and I think the most important one are the chores that I have to do, which is quite new to me. Up to now, I'm doing quite well! Groceries, cleaning, cooking, dishes and doing the laundry. Unbelievable how much time you can spend just doing that. Those that have been independent for a while are probably chuckling by now :)

BUT I LOVE TO DO IT! Cooking, cleaning, dishes, and well, laundry.. You might guess it: a good story about to come up right now?
It all started with a simple realisation: In about two days I'll be running out of clean underwear - never been a fan of going commando, so I had to find a solution. The only possible dates for washing were gonna be Tuesday or Wednesday. On Wednesday we were scheduled for a trip to Gruyère, the nearby home of the famous cheese (that I absolutely adore by the way), so there was Tuesday night left, from 7 to 10 pm.
I was invited for dinner that night, so I made up my mind to be back home at 8 and wash 2 wash cycles, so I'd be done before 10 pm and ready to go to bed with a happiness that only the diligent are granted.
And there it goes: Sure I didn't leave before several minutes after 8, so I hurried back to the parking garage. I had to put my ticket in a machine to open the door. At the checkout I realized I didn't have enough coins, but I didn't want to give my 20 CHF bill. I knew that I still had coins in the car. So I went through the door and... couldn't find the car! Went to the third and first floor, finally found the car, got in, took a few coins and hurried back. I was already worried to run really late on the laundry. So I had to go out of the door again to get to 2nd floor were the register was, pull out my ticket to open the door... Pull out what? The ticket? Too bad, the ticket wasn't there - it was still in the car where I left it when I collected the money. So I was outside, my car locked inside. Since it was already night, there was no one left to help. I was really going to run late now, right? What was I supposed to do?
After a few minutes of running around aimlessly, freaking out and sweating I decided to walk back down the car entrance - stupid and barely legal, but what was I supposed to do.
Anyway I finally got to the car and got to go home - sweaty, frustrated with myself and grumpy, I had enough time left to wash one part of my stuff.
At least that worked well - when I got back up to the appartement I was still gloomy and bad tempered. I opened my notebook and looked up a blog I've been reading (http://devog.wordpress.com) and it struck me like a lightning:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Josh 1:9 (NIV)

Isn't this amazing? How easy do I get frustrated with little things? Something doesn't go exactly the way I planned, expected or hoped and immediately, I start complaining.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think so, do you?
When we take our eyes off the minor annoyances and get back into right perspective, we realize how small they actually are. How ridiculous it is too complain, especially compared to those who are faced with a real life crisis.

Bottom line: I was annoyed and it cost me a lot of energy, but I was able to finish the laundry the next day and actually, everything went fine.
Big or small, our attitude can make the difference all the way.

Don't let yourself get knocked down,
Christoph
