Zweifel - Doubts

Posted by Christoph

Sieh ganz genau hin!
Vergiss nicht wer du bist! Lerne, lebe, lache, liebe. Deinen Nächsten wie dich selbst.
Mach was draus. Dann wird sogar aus merkwürdig, merk-würdig! :)

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This past week, I've been learning a lot about doubt.

1. Webster's defines doubt as
a : uncertainty of belief or opinion that often interferes with decision-making
b : a deliberate suspension of judgment
a : a state of affairs giving rise to uncertainty, hesitation, or suspense <the outcome is still in doubt>
a : a lack of confidence : distrust <has doubts about his abilities>
b : an inclination not to believe or accept <a claim met with doubt>

2. Zweifel (German for doubt) is the name of a Swiss potato chips brand:

3.You can find hundreds of quotes about doubt. It is especially interesting to see what a different range of quotes you can get in English compared to German. And how differently people think about the subject:
"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy." Dale Carnegie
"Wonder rather than doubt is the root of all knowledge." Abraham Joshua Heschel
(So different from what the German one's say!)
"Doubt, indulged and cherished, is in danger of becoming denial; but if honest, and bent on thorough investigation, it may soon lead to full establishment of the truth."
Ambrose Bierce " (more what the German quotes say)

Personal favorite:
"If you are ever in doubt as to whether to kiss a pretty girl, always give her the benefit of the doubt." Thomas Carlyle

4. Truth is something infinitely important. To know the truth about oneself is essential and sometimes it hurts, but it's always worth it.
The only danger is in indulging it, in cherishing it. You eventually end up doubting everything and denying anything.

This past year, I've been doubting many of the decisions that I've made and with some, it was very much necessary to do so! The turbulences of this time however have taken me past what is good and necessary and it resulted in denial of everything that I knew and ever liked about myself. Ultimately, it resulted in a lack of confidence.
I've come a long way in realizing this, and I've got to say: It feels great! :)
Thank God, I've met people and have been to places that challenged those sinister beliefs I had acquired. Little by little I am stepping out of a season of insecurity and uncertainty.
That is a whole new problem in itself. I am part of the "Generation Maybe". (Sorry, article's in German!) We have all the possibilites that globalization and years of economic boom have brought us, we're educated and equipped and yet we fret making decisions. Who knows what is the right choice anyway? Read the quotations in section 3 again: Go out and get busy. It's a call to action. I won't be a maybe anymore.
I want to thank everyone who has been part of my journey in the past year! You are amazing! Kosovo, Romania, Fribourg. You know who you are - THANK YOU! :)

5. Extracts from James:

Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open. (...)
There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the crown of all his creatures.
(...)
Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.
But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action.

Today, I want to invite you to take a good look in the mirror. Take a close look.
You (and I) we're called to be women and men of action, not of suspense and indifference.
Sure, maybe not everything you see is likeable, or good. Maybe all you can see is quirks and fear. But don't forget who you are:
You are the CROWN, not the clown of God's creatures!

And he wants to SHOW YOU OFF! How amazing is that! :)
Go out and get busy :)

Erasmus English and Tuesday's Top Ten

Posted by Christoph

Hey there :)

How do you like the new blog design? I'm still trying to figure everything out and I will make some slight changes, design wise, as soon as I can.
I'm pretty psyched though! It feels more like a real blog now :)
Let me know what you think!

Want to hear a funny story? I really wanted to write a blog-post today.
I thought, why not for once do something short and light-hearted, like a list of random thoughts and foolish things.
Then I thought: Hey maybe you could make this to be a regular thing! Like every Tuesday post a list like this and it should have a cool alliterated name, like Tuesday... Tuesday's Top Ten! And as I basked in the glow of this wonderfully cheesy name I realized:
One of my favourite bloggers does the exact same thing! I already new that the list idea was from him. I swear though, I didn't realize before I finished the thought that his list is actually called Tuesday's Top Ten.
Check his blog out, it's awesome: www.joshweed.com or find it in the menu under "Featured" - "The Weed"
I guess I have to come up with something a little more original. Next time:

1) Have you ever listened to a song for the millionth time and all of sudden, become incredibly smitten with it? Before you maybe didn't even notice it between other favourites on an album and the next moment it's like BAM! Where have you been, love?
And the most ridiculous things too sometimes, maybe the sound of a snare, the use of a certain fill/riff, extremely well done and well hidden background vocals, you name it.
Today I've been listening to "Hallelujah Jesus" by Monk&Neagle. Listen from 3:00 on and pay attention to the background vocals - the solist. You almost can't hear her, but she's insanely good!

2) I've had a nice experience with Erasmus English today. That's a nice term for the crappy, funny and sometimes even scary type of English we non-natives sometimes use.
Today's revelation: Never say "and then we started doing it". Say "and then we started doing the dishes" etc. What struck me most though is that there just isn't a shorter way.

3) Lonely Planet's books are full of alliterations. I do like them, I really do. But LP seems to love them so much, they'd probably marry it. And call their children Audrey Alexandra Annabelle and Micah Michael Morgan.

4) Not everyday do you receive an e-mail from a person you'd like to join for an internship, at 22:21 concerning some difficulties I might encounter and trying to solve them. It is very likely that I'd reply at around midnight. But to actually get another answer back at 00:15 boggles my mind. Dear anonymous, you're amazing!

5) A considerable number of sloths (the actual animal) dies every year because they confuse their own arms with a branch they can hold on to - causing them to fall to their death. I'm not sure if I'm laughing or crying with this one!

German will follow soon this time - I hope! :)

Le temps a laissé son manteau!

Posted by Christoph

Liebe Freunde,

Gouttes d'argent, d'orfèvrerie;

"
Das Wetter hat seinen Mantel zurückgelassen
von Wind, von Kälte und Regen
, "

Fluß, Brunnen und Bach
tragen in offenbarter Schönheit,
Tropfen aus Silber und Goldhandwerk;
Ein jeder kleidet sich neu.
Das Wetter hat seinen Mantel zurückgelassen.

Charles d'Orléans

Dear Friends,

Something really really bizarre happened yesterday! All of a sudden, there appeared a strange yellow disk in the sky. It was much too warm for wearing a coat or a sweatshirt, no idea why! Even more peculiar: the sky itself didn't show it's usual grey-ish colour but appeared in another colour - I've been told it's name is blue. Very bright it was indeed. Well, duly noted!

In all seriousness, I sincerely hope all of you enjoyed this first perfect spring day, did you? :)

The Erasmus Family chose to seize the day and make our way to Geneva! To be honest, I didn't have to many expectations, as I've been told it's not the most beautiful city by many different people - included some who live there! I admit that a huge part of it might have been the weather, but I absolutely LOVED Geneva. Just loved it :)

I think there are a lot of beautiful thinks to see and explore there! Especially because the city is situated close to the lake ("Oh Lac Léman, mon amour!") but also because she is filled with parcs and green areas around every corner. In between those one can find many modern buildings as well as the charming old town, with it's one-of-a-kind buildings and the little places, the cathedral and lots of stairs - I think the stairs are a huge plus on the romantic side of things here :)
You can walk there from the cathedral, pass Rue du Soleil-Levant (street of the sunrise) and arrive at the city hall which reminds me more of a castle than of a town hall, even though it's glass facade brings you right back into modern times. Never underestimate the joys of eating cookies near the Reformation memorial in the sunshine :)
Of course the jet d'eau poses as one of the city's main attractions, being after all with 140m of height one of the tallest fountains in the world! Due to it's size you can spot it from many a corner in the city.

We also saw the UN, even though only from the outside and afterwards we went on to France, to go eat :) Convince yourself of the stunning beauty of a lakeside sunset! So in total we made a whole tour around the lake, which is really cool.

Last but not least, I'd like to include a poem about spring that I really like (French above):

Spring Poem

The weather has left its coat behind
of wind and cold and rain,
and dressed itself in embroidery,
in brilliant sunlight, clear and beautiful.

There is neither beast nor bird,
that doesn't cry or sing with it's voice:
"
The weather has left its coat behind,
of wind and cold and rain!"

River, fountain and stream
bear in liberated beauty,
drops of silver and gold;
Everyone dresses all new.
The weather has left its coat behind.

Charles d'Orléans

Have a nice spring everyone :)
