Oh Canada! One month to go!

Posted by Christoph

Bleib also nicht besonders lange :)

This time I have some really great news: I will go to Canada! If it is the Lord's will and I live, that is :)

In spring I applied for a study tour that deals with the Canada-EU relations and where about 20 students from all over Europe will travel to Canada and visit different organizations that deal with Canadian politics, economy, environmental issues, Asian relations, human trafficking and so forth. We will be accompanied by a team of academics to support our experience and learning.
I'll be leaving September 1 for Brussels where we will have a few days of preparation and briefing before flying across the big pond where the adventure will kick off. I'll be back by the beginning of October so don't worry too much, this is not a second Switzerland ;)

I'm really excited to get the chance to do this - I'm also really nervous so I appreciate your support. I think Canada offers a lot of experience and the study tour will prove to be great input. We'll see what happens :)

Pause for Thought: Playing Drums in Heaven

Posted by Christoph

There is not many things I can't do that I generally wish I could.
There are some. Depending on my state of mind, sometimes I get frustrated or fed up with the limitations that the disability imposes on me.
Sometimes I see a really cool rock in the middle of somewhere and I wish I was able to jump on/off it. Sometimes I see a staircase and I wish I wouldn't need to ask for help to take it. I see fathers picking up their kids when they hurt themselves and they cry. I see the comfort they get from it and I wonder what my child's reaction would be. Would it feel like something is missing?
I'm betting you're tempted to tell me that it won't. That other things are way way more important. And yet sometimes it will matter, and you know it.
I'd like to be able to dance. Especially because I'd like to be able to be as free whenever I feel like it. And I'd like to play an instrument. Well.

However, let's not be over-eager. Maybe it's good that I don't. For my pride, I think it is. Also, we don't know if I'd be any good at it anyway, so maybe we're all better off :)
With many of the above said points I know pride and my ego are an issue. I know none of these has any real and lasting effect on my quality of life. It could, but I won't let it devour me. Period. But God, I'd so like to be able to play drums sometimes. Or jump around, or dance. I see so many people that don't do all of these and that's legitimate, but also sad. I feel like I don't even get a chance, while others are simply too afraid. Speaking of fear, one of the most attracting features of people that don't give a hoot about what they're dancing looks like, whether their voice is any good, or what others think of what they're doing, is that their freedom catches on with others. And I'd like to be the sort person that enables others to be free and to be themselves. To let go of fear and embarassment.

Yesterday I took part in a rather intimate worship gathering at church. And many times these things remind me of the above mentioned stuff that I miss out on. When I'd like to dance for example. Or play an instrument myself. And then I have to get back to the fact that worship isn't necessarily about what I'd like to do or experience, but about being close to God and communicating with him. Sometimes I feel like he is also sad that I can't express myself the way I'd want to. And I guess that's part of life.
I don't know if you think there's a heaven and even if you do, I don't know what you imagine it to be. I like to think that it will be a life without limits. A place where my love and my trust will be without borders. I'm sure there will be a lot of worship. Everything will have an entirely new form. I like to imagine that I can play drums in heaven. I don't know if I will really be able to, but it won't really matter for sure. Sometimes that thought just helps me to look past my present restrictions. In truth, there is not many things I can't do. And I'm thankful for that.

It's Adrian Plass who wrote, that spring makes him think about Jesus. When you look at all the beauty of nature and the well-being it brings to your soul, you can't help but be amazed. And he says he's reminded that Jesus died prematurely when he gave his life on the cross. He gave up many springs so we could live.
I'm thankful for that too.

Posted by Christoph

Almost as soon as I returned to Austria I had the chance to leave it again for vacation. Interestingly enough did I pack my bags with a bit of reluctance if you will. I'm definitely not complaining, as I've been very much looking foward to discovering Spain and three weeks worth of it! Nonetheless, I had just started to get a bit comfortable at home and was looking foward to work on my thesis and it just threw me off a bit.
I guess this shows my emotional ambivalence in the past weeks. Ironically, a swiss pop group, whose music I don't even like, wrote a song that I feel could give words to what I'm feeling (I'm pretty sure they meant something different, but I'm hijacking their line anyway: "I ha Heimweh nach dr Färne und Färnweh nach Deheime" (less poetically sound English version of this Swiss German monstrosity: I'm homesick for far away and got a travel bug for home).

Anway, back to Spain:
It all started with a week spent in Andalucia, the marvellous south of Spain. A friend from exchange invited us to spend vacation at his families flat there and we gladly accepted this amazing offer: Erasmus Reloaded! A week filled with beach, visiting cities and a little more beach awaited us. Don't forget the amazing food! I think I fell in love with many parts of Spanish lifestyle: Tapas for example and especially ordering a portion of many different dishes to share. Taste and see that everything the Spanish cook is good ;) Or also: "Eat more things, faster". And it's still not Fast Food :)

Unbedingte Reiseempfehlung :) (Las Fallas - "Geheimtipp")

After the lovely Andalucia, my journey led me to Valencia to meet my family, powered by Ryanair. Two funny facts about this cheap and Spanish domestic flight: A South African girl and me were, I'm sure, the only non-Spanish passengers and I was definitely the only one carrying checked-in baggage. As I got to baggage claim, I was preparing myself for the usual 5 to 30 minutes waiting when I saw my case sitting lonely on the ALREADY stopped conveyor belt. I'm pretty sure that has never happened to anyone, ever. Also, I met a really nice and talkative teenage couple on the flight and we had a nice chat. Life gets good as simple as that :)
United with my family we went and discovered Valencia. I had visited the city two years before when a friend spent her exchange there so it was nice to come back. Hi Viki by the way :) It's a vibrant and interesting city, highly recommendable. Especially the incredible, modern zoo that specializes in keeping things natural, with as little visible artificial barriers as possible. Highlights including elephants, gorillas, lions and dancing hippos. You won't regret it. On top of that, Valencia gave us the Festival of Fireworks one night, which meant 20 minutes of first class fireworks. Valencia is a good place for that, especially in Las Fallas. Go there :)

From Valencia we made our way to Mallorca - 10 days packed with discoveries and relaxation, beautiful landscapes and everything far away from "Ballermann". For Mallorca has so much more to offer than drunk German and British tourists. If you wanna see a good spot to start exploring that yourself, go ahead and despair!

The good news is that happiness like that is just a few clicks away - visit www.fincasamaniga.com :) Don't stop there!

So who would have thought that I would, on that very island simple and beautiful, meet somebody. Someone who welcomed me happily into her life. Someone with beautiful black hair. And we knew it was love at first sight at the from the first wag of her tail.

Meet Fosca!

There is only one thing that made me quite sad: Hearing firsthand of Spain's economic crisis. If you hear from your hosts for example that even with a fully booked hotel they have difficulties even to get by, that school lunch gets cut for budget reasons which for many children posed as the only warm meal each day, then you start thinking. And you might feel rich and awful, enjoying your awesome breakfast on vacation, ungrateful and selfish. Ironically, the situation would be no better if one were not to go. Quite the contrary. What's left to do? Pray and keep your eyes open for possibilities to fight for a just world, a world of equality. Country by country and topic by topic.

Enough of that.
Stay tuned this week for yet another blog post with astonishing news!

Pause for Thought: A Pause

Posted by Christoph

So the last time I introduced a new format of blog-posts to this my very own not-private journal. Pause for Thought. My longtime hopes in it are to make you laugh, think and pretty much experience a multitude of human feelings. Most hopefully your beliefs will be challenged because you'd have never thought that I could come up with nonsense like that.

Anyhoo, I am so happy about this idea and I look forward to exploring its highs and lows with you together. Unfortunately or rather fortunately at the moment I am experiencing sparse exposure to Internet access due to VACATION :) I hope however to be able to write over the next two weeks, so stay tuned! Meanwhile enjoy the awesomeness of above picture and

A vacation is having nothing to do and all day to do it in.
